Are all the jobs actually being replaced by AI like we keep getting told? Because according to some of this labor market research from Anthropic that they just released, it seems like it's kind of just the theory everybody keeps saying. Now there are of course some industries that have been hit harder than others, that's obvious. But when you look at this blue line which is actually theoretical AI replacement, how much we think it could be replaced, it goes pretty far up in the industries that we think it could. But this red line of actual observed AI replacement is much smaller. Does this mean that down the line it could reach this blue? Sure, absolutely. But this also probably means we're seeing a lot of AI whitewashing going on of companies blaming AI when not actually replacing people with AI. Block being the most recent example. The study has also found since late 2022 that there really is no systematic increase in unemployment tied to AI replacement. Although hiring of younger workers has slowed in the most exposed areas, which I guess isn't too surprising. Which means if you're looking for areas to break into and you don't want to touch AI, you can see some obvious ones on this chart. But it also means that maybe we need to stop saying AI is replacing all the jobs and stop letting CEOs and companies get away with blaming it for simply cutting costs for other reasons.
